New Hope's holiday season begins about two weeks before the tree on West Ferry Street is lit. Between November 15 and Thanksgiving Day, Holiday Inn is running at the Playhouse, a national woodworking show is hanging at New Hope Arts, the rail bikes are on their last weeks, and the New Hope Railroad is selling its cheapest Santa train fares of the year. The town's own celebrations land after that, on the weekends the railroad prices as its busiest.
Seen together, those calendars give a resident a fairly reliable map of the season's crowds. It runs in three parts: a quiet stretch in mid-November, a crowded peak around the tree lighting and parade, and a quieter run of December weekdays after that.
The railroad's fare calendar tracks the busy dates
The New Hope Railroad sorts every date of Santa's North Pole Express into four fare tiers. The railroad says its fares move with demand, with value days "invariably the most economical choice" and "available exclusively in November." Peak days, it says, are "typically the busiest days." The railroad sets those tiers to match demand, so the same calendar shows when the 1891 station, the gift shops and the streets around them are likely to be fullest.
Here is the 2026 calendar with the days of the week filled in:
| Fare tier | 2026 dates | What the days have in common |
|---|---|---|
| Value | Nov. 15, 16, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 | Two Sunday–Monday pairs, then the Tuesday through Thursday of Thanksgiving week |
| Peak | Nov. 28, 29, 30; Dec. 1, 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28 | Every weekend from Thanksgiving Saturday on, plus the Monday after it |
| Off-peak | Dec. 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 29, 30 | Tuesday through Friday from Dec. 8 on, minus Christmas week's Thursday and Friday |
| Christmas Eve | Dec. 24 | The top tier, on its own |
Two patterns stand out. Thanksgiving Day itself, November 26, is the last value date. Two days later, Thanksgiving Saturday starts a peak run that lasts through Tuesday, December 1. In December, the peak tier also covers the Monday after each weekend, while the Fridays of December 11 and 18 stay off-peak.
The ride is about an hour, round trip from New Hope Station to Lahaska. It offers coach, first class, private rooms and a private caboose, with cocoa, a cookie, and a sleigh bell for each child from Santa. The railroad sells tickets online in advance. The station has a self-service kiosk, but it warns that availability "isn't assured."
What's already running in the value weeks
The cheapest train dates line up with a stretch when much of New Hope's cultural calendar is already open.
Works in Wood 2026 opens at New Hope Arts on Saturday, November 7, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m., and runs through December 13. It is a national juried show of studio furniture, turnings, sculpture and vessels, and every entry must be at least half wood. This year's juror is John Conver Lutz, General Manager of George Nakashima Woodworker. He spent 18 years as a designer at Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers before returning to his family's Bucks County homestead in 2004. The show closes on a peak Sunday, so the earlier weekdays are the calmer time to see it.
Irving Berlin's Holiday Inn opens at Bucks County Playhouse on Thursday, November 19, and runs through January 3, 2027. On Sunday, November 22, a value day on the railroad's calendar, the Playhouse Barn hosts a single 7 p.m. performance of The Most Wonderful Time: Jenny Lee Stern.
The rail bikes are in their final month. The New Hope Railroad's electric-assist rail bikes were new this year. The Courier Times reported that the Lahaska-to-Buckingham trips started May 22, with a longer New Hope-to-Lahaska route planned for early July. The railroad's rail bike FAQ lists both routes running through November, with no December dates. The New Hope departure covers about 8 miles round trip in roughly two hours, and the Lahaska departure covers about 6 miles in roughly 90 minutes.
The railroad also lists the Buckingham Flyer as its newest excursion. It is a 90-minute round trip south from New Hope into the Buckingham Valley, and its booking page has the current departure dates.
Put together, a resident could see the woodworking show, take a rail bike out of New Hope, and catch Holiday Inn's first week, all on dates the railroad prices at its lowest.
Nov. 28 to Dec. 7: The town's traditions land on peak dates
The Greater New Hope Chamber of Commerce schedules both of its signature December-season events inside the railroad's first peak run.
- The Annual Christmas Tree Lighting is Sunday, November 29, at 5 p.m., presented by the Chamber and the Logan Inn. The Chamber says it has taken place in the heart of New Hope for more than 40 years, with holiday music, hot chocolate, cookies and Santa's arrival. Visit Bucks County lists it at the Logan Inn, 10 West Ferry Street, from 5 to 7 p.m.
- The Holiday Parade is Sunday, December 6, at 4 p.m., with music, floats, entertainers and Santa. Last year's parade stepped off from New Hope-Solebury High School and came along Bridge Street and South Main Street, according to New Hope Free Press. The Chamber has not yet posted the 2026 route.
Both are Sunday afternoon events, and both fall on dates the railroad treats as its busiest. For anyone planning around the crowds, that has a practical side.
Getting downtown
The Route 202 toll bridge, about a mile north of downtown New Hope and Lambertville, is still down to one lane in each direction. In a June 24 release, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission said the work should finish in the first half of 2027, when the bridge returns to two lanes each way. Slightly more than 10,000 vehicles cross it a day, and tolls are collected only in the Pennsylvania-bound direction. Guests coming from the New Jersey side on parade Sunday will find one lane on that crossing all season.
Parking
The Borough's parking FAQ lists paid enforcement daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Street parking costs $2 an hour, rising to $4 an hour after four hours on South Main Street, Ferry Street to the canal, and Waterloo Street. Kiosks take payment by license plate, and the Borough also accepts the ParkMobile app. The four-hour mark matters on parade day. A family that parks on South Main for lunch and stays through a 4 p.m. step-off can cross into the higher rate.
December weekdays are the second quiet window
After December 7, the railroad's calendar switches to off-peak Tuesday-through-Friday dates. That gives a second, longer window for anything missed in November. Works in Wood has its last weekdays from December 8 to 11, and Holiday Inn plays on into January. Anyone who has already seen the show can join the Playhouse's Books in the Barn group, which meets earlier, on Wednesday, December 2, at 7 p.m., to discuss Holiday Inn.
Christmas week works differently. The railroad prices December 24 alone at its top tier. From December 24 to 27, the Ten Crucial Days 250 Grand Event marks the Revolution's 250th anniversary across Washington Crossing, Trenton and Princeton, with both the Pennsylvania and New Jersey sides of Washington Crossing taking part. That event overlaps the Christmas Eve tier and the railroad's final peak weekend.
Last year, the Borough made its own parking spaces free from December 22 to 25 and from December 29 through January 1. Private lots were not included, New Hope Free Press reported. The Borough has not yet announced 2026 dates, so last year's schedule is only a guide to when they might fall.
