The Old Candlewyck on Durham Road Still Stays Open Late. Now It Serves Ice Cream.

October 15, 2026

For about sixty years, 2551 Durham Road meant beef, ale and a bar stool a short drive from Route 202. This October, the same building posts its hours as noon to 10 every night, and the counter offers apple cider donut ice cream sandwiches and milkshakes topped with small ghosts.

The building is known locally as the old Candlewyck. It sits in a shopping strip just off Route 202 on Durham Road. Since August 8, 2026, it has been home to Humdoo Ice Cream. The menu has changed completely. What stayed the same is the building's place in Buckingham's evenings. It is still somewhere to go after dinner, after a game, or after the rest of the 202 corridor has gone dark. The crowd it is built for is different now.

A Feed Mill, Then a Pub, Then a Long Pause

The building started out as a feed mill. The restaurant moved in on Durham Road in 1965, according to WPST. Most people who have lived in Buckingham for any length of time knew it as the Candlewyck Pub and Restaurant, also listed as Candlewyck Beef & Ale. That name lasted through decades of family ownership.

Year What happened at 2551 Durham Road
1965 The Candlewyck opens in a former feed mill
July 2024 New owners take over and rebrand it as The Wyck
December 2025 The restaurant closes and does not reopen
April 2026 Patch reports the space has been leased to a new tenant
August 8, 2026 Humdoo Ice Cream opens its Buckingham shop

Under the name The Wyck, the restaurant updated its menu around wings, burgers, handhelds and pizza, BUCKSCO Today reported. It closed in mid-December 2025. A small takeout shop next door, the Q-Wyck Stop Sandwich Shop & Beer Store, operated for a few weeks early this year. By late April, Patch reported that a new tenant had signed a lease for the former Candlewyck site.

From December to August, no restaurant operated in the building.

Nine Hundred People on a Saturday

About 900 people came to the opening on Saturday, August 8, Central Bucks Now reported. There was live music, punch cards, and an offer to fill tumblers with several flavors. The first 50 customers got a free small serving.

Founder Gabriella Truppi started the business at 20 with a pink ice cream truck called Scoops on Wheels. In 2021 she opened her first storefront in a small cabin at 20 Stangl Road in Flemington, New Jersey. The Buckingham shop is her second location and the brand's first in Pennsylvania. According to the same Central Bucks Now report, she had been considering the expansion for about two years before signing the Candlewyck lease.

After opening day she wrote online, "Our second store is open." Central Bucks Now quoted that post, along with her description of months of construction setbacks and late nights to get the space ready.

What the Counter Serves in a Former Pub

The menu is a big change from beef and ale. The Buckingham shop offers:

  • 24 hand-scooped hard ice cream flavors, which Truppi calls "super premium," with 14% to 16% butterfat
  • Milkshakes, sundaes and ice cream cakes
  • A soda bar with dirty sodas, floats and fizzies, which debuted at this location
  • A fully peanut- and tree-nut-free menu

Flavors named in the opening coverage include Lemon Bar, Chocoholic, Campfire S'mores, Banana Pudding and Blueberry Waffle Cone.

Those cakes are ordered through Humdoo's custom order form, which lets you choose the Buckingham location. Options include 8-inch, 10-inch and sheet cakes, 8-ounce Dot Cakes, and ice cream sandwiches. The form asks for 48 hours' notice.

October Changes the Menu Without Closing the Doors

Humdoo's contact page lists the Buckingham address with store hours of noon to 10 p.m., Monday through Sunday. The page doesn't say whether those hours apply to one shop or both, and it doesn't list a separate winter schedule. Call the shop at (267) 544-0357 before a late visit.

Instead of shorter hours, October brings a fall menu. Humdoo's Instagram feed, shown on its homepage, announced two seasonal items:

  1. Apple Cider Donut Ice Cream Sammies, with any flavor between two cider donuts. A recent post said they would be available for "3 more weeks," so they're likely gone by early November.
  2. HumBOO Shakes, available in any flavor and topped with what the shop calls "the cutest little ghosts."

For pairings, the shop suggests Pumpkin, Caramel Apple Crisp, Churrochata, Jolted Cow, Campfire S'mores, Bear Creek Caramel and Tipsy Banana. The post says the items are available "while supplies last."

The Prythian Nights

The biggest change is the event calendar. On Humdoo's feed, the shop is promoting "A Night in Prythian," a ticketed celebration of the ACOTAR book series. Guests build a Court Sundae, make a Prythian bag charm, and visit Celaena's Candy Bar. Add-ons include Meet the Suriel, The Forge, and VIP Inner Circle Access. Tickets start at $35.

The posted dates don't all agree, so it helps to see them together:

Event as posted Date Sessions
A Night in Prythian October 22 5, 6, 7 and 8 p.m.
A Night in Prythian October 25 2, 3, 4 and 5 p.m.
An Afternoon in Prythian October 25 2, 3, 4 and 5 p.m.

According to the feed, Meet the Suriel is limited to six guests per session. Check the ticket page at humdooicecream.com for the date and session you want before planning around it.

The Same Corner, Booked by a Different Crowd

The Candlewyck spent decades as a pub at a busy junction near 202. Its last owners kept it in that mold, with pizza and wings that WPST described as popular with locals. Humdoo uses the same address and similar late hours for a different audience. Its posts carry #buckscounty and #phillybooktok tags, it sells ticketed afternoon sessions for readers, and its whole menu is peanut- and tree-nut-free.

For anyone who lives within a few minutes of Durham Road and Route 202, that means the familiar building has new uses. It works for a 9 p.m. milkshake after a weeknight practice, a cake ordered two days ahead, or a Saturday afternoon session with a friend who has read all the books. The feed mill that became a pub in 1965 now posts closing time as 10 p.m., seven days a week.

If you'd like to know what a change on your own stretch of road might mean for a home you own nearby, or a building with as much history as 2551 Durham Road, Lisa Povlow and our team are glad to talk it through. Schedule a private consultation.
